Historic traffic routes

With its Inventory of Swiss Historic Traffic Routes, the Federal Roads Office (FRO) commands comprehensive information on the history of traffic in Switzerland. Several particularly interesting examples from this inventory, on or near the Hiking in Switzerland routes, are integrated as information from SwitzerlandMobility and linked to the inventory via the website. An ideal opportunity to delve into an all-embracing inventory of historic routes and to trace the footsteps of our forefathers.

Information for pilgrims

The European Jakobswege (Routes of St. James) project of the Bernese Oberland Chamber of Commerce and its partners in neighbouring countries, coordinates the European Routes of St. James and places some emphasis on the spiritual aspect of the route and pilgrims. The SwitzerlandMobility information on the Via Jacobi route is supplemented by the Bernese Oberland Chamber of Commerce with a link to «Information for pilgrims». These links are shown on the information on the routes.

Cultural information

Eight Hiking in Switzerland routes are Via routes and with the exception of ViaAlpina are also a part of the Cultural Routes of Switzerland, the ViaStoria programme for cross-linking tourism, culture and regional products along historic traffic routes. The specialist organization, the ViaStoria Centre for Traffic History, a spin-off from Bern University, has put its endeavours into the research, preservation and appropriate use of historic traffic routes for over 20 years. It has initiated the Cultural Routes of Switzerland tourism programme, compiled a comprehensive history of traffic in Switzerland and publishes the magazine «Wege und Geschichte» (routes and history). A link named «Cultural Information» on the SwitzerlandMobility website leads to interesting cultural historic background information on the respective Via routes.
