Thusis lies at the northern entrance to the spectacular Viamala gorge on the Hinterrhein river. The Graubunden town is the departure point of the Albula Railway, many pass roads and excursions to the Heinzerberg area and Domleschg with its many castles.
The small spa resort of Andeer lies in the Shamsertal (Val Schons), a section of the Hinterrheintal. Famed for its rugged gorges and mineral spa, Andeer lies on the road to the Splügen and San Bernardino passes.
Their location near the Splügen and San Bernardino Passes has characterised the villages in the Rheinwald region: Splügen is a typical pass village with an intact original architectural appearance, impressive palazzi and sun-darkened wooden Walser houses.
Isola on the Splügenpass is often chosen as a stage stop on the several-day culturally historic Via Spluga, a long-distance tour from Thusis to Chiavenna in Italy. The mule trail section above Isola through the Cardinello-Schlucht (gorge) is truly spectacular.
Two Alpine pass roads fork off at Chiavenna: one runs northwards through the Val San Giàcomo over the Splügenpass. The other runs eastwards through the Val Bregaglia to the Malojapass or as an erstwhile pack mule trail from Casaccia over the Septimerpass.
